Dave,

Your question is not an easy one to answer. It depends upon what is meant by a 'support group'? Currently we support survivors or domestic violence in a number of ways. Wear Valley has recently been successful in a bid for neighbourhood renewal funding which will increase our capacity to support survivors and also children affected by domestic violence considerably.

But as things stand, now we support male and female survivors by offering outreach support from No. 75 Proudfoot Drive on Woodhouse Close Estate, in Bishop Auckland. The support is provided by a part time officer and two volunteers. Support is also provided to female survivors from Women's Aid based at the Domestic Violence Refuge. Womens Aid have also in the past set up support groups for women but these have evolved at the request of the women themselves on a need led basis. I am not in a position to give you costs for support provided from the refuge. I would estimate the costs for support from No. 75 Proudfoot Drive to be approximately at least £12,000 per annum and this would include salary costs, and a proportion of the telephone bill and rent. The support covers the districts of Wear Valley and Teesdale, both in the County of Durham.

We also target harden both male and female victims homes, including alarms where appropriate and this cost is not included above. We set aside £10,000 per annum for this service. Both males and female survivors of domestic violence are rehoused in line with the respective housing policies. No distinction is made between the sexes.

I hope that this level of information is enough but please to not hesitate to contact me or Tracy again if you require something more specific.

Again apologies for the late response.

David

My name is Tracy Olley and I am the Domestic Abuse Co-ordinator for Wear & Tees Community Safety Partnership and Manager of a Domestic Abuse Support service covering Wear Valley and Teesdale. I also mirror the roll in the neighbouring Sedgefield Area where we have a Women's Centre.

At No 75: which is based in Bishop Auckland we support both male and female victims of domestic abuse, and at No 31 & SODA in Sedgefield we support female victims within the Women's Centre. However we have take possession of the building next door and we can now support men there, which we feel is of great benefit as we used to support men purely on an outreach basis. We have the capacity to offer group support to male victims, however, men rarely contact the service.

At both services we have supported male victims for the last 18months. We have advertised that we support men and have just had a poster campaign depicting a male victim (which I will attach)

We have a male volunteer support worker, counsellors and support workers who do offer their services to male victims.

We run the The Freedom Programme for women and as the services continue to develope we will be able to offer other group support.

We also have a children's worker who supports children up to the age of 11, and volunteer who will support young people of 11 and above.

Any further information in regard to funding etc you will have to contact Elaine Baker at Wear Valley District Council as this is not my area.

Hope this has been helpful, please do not hesitate in contacting me if you require further information.

Kind Regards
Tracy Olley
