Subject: Support for male victims of domestic violence
Dear Dave
As far as I am aware the
Focus Group was funded jointly but the TDVF and Health Promotions
and therefore the council did not directly or indirectly fund the
group but you would need to contact Sally Denley for the funding details
as this Group was formed before I came into post. Her telephone number
is 01304 828703
The Freedom Programme received
£2000 from the Local Board Councillors for 05 to 06 and this
mainly paid for a crèche for the children of the family between
February to May when the first Freedom Programme ran in Thanet.
SureStart Margate has given
£2000 for a future Freedom Programme and Henry Smith have also
given £2000 for a future Programme. Fegans placed their own
bid for funding under their charitable status and received a similar
amount for a future Freedom Programme in Thanet.
I hope this more fully
answers your questions
Kind regards Rose Ellison

Subject: Support for male victims of domestic violence
Dear Dave
Sorry for delay
in replying to you but I have been asked by Nigel Cruttenden to reply
to your request for information concerning how many support groups
are funded in the Thanet area for:
A) Male victims
As far as I am
aware there are no support groups running in Thanet for male victims.
There are several agencies such as NCH, HomeStart and SureStart who
are trying to develop male groups and from this if there is a demand
maybe a male victim (survivor) group could be developed.
B) Female victims
As far as I am
aware there has been two support groups run in Thanet for female victims
(survivors). One Focus Group met to discuss how each agency had performed
whilst they were fleeing domestic violence and a report was produced
(which I attach for your information).
The second group
was the Freedom Programme run for 12 weeks (starting in February 2006)
and funded by the Local Board Councillor members. We do have future
funding from SureStart Margate for a second group to start in September
2006 and have just received further funding for next year (2007) from
a bid I placed on behalf of the Thanet Domestic Violence Forum from
the Henry Smith Charity. Also the charity Fegans in Ramsgate are hoping
to fund a group funded by Kent Community Foundation.
C) How much each
one receives pa
See above for
the finances supporting the groups.
May I just mention
that in Thanet we generally do not use the term ‘victim’
but prefer to use the term ‘survivor’ as a more descriptive
way of referring to a person who has suffered domestic violence or
abuse.
As the Thanet
Domestic Violence Co-ordinator I am responsible for starting new initiatives
and supporting all statutory and voluntary agencies in Thanet to support
people experiencing domestic violence and abuse in a none gender specific
inclusive manner (please see attached Thanet Domestic Violence Forum
Policy Statement). To this aim all information, leaflets, posters
and advice given is not gender specific unless appropriate so as not
to exclude males experiencing domestic violence from gaining support
and advice.
If you wish to
have further information or want to discuss any issues please do not
hesitate to contact me on 01843 280555.
Regards
Rose Ellison

Violence Forum Co-ordinator
