In response to
your request for information Suffolk County Council provided a total
of £32,500 towards domestic violence services in 2005/06 financial
year.
We recognise the
needs of all victims, especially men who may face additional barriers
to disclosure and seeking help and have taken steps to ensure that
services are provided appropriately.
The total funding
was made up of the following components:
£11,000
towards costs for our 24hr freephone helpline and website. The helpline
is available to both male and female victims and their families, and
staff from voluntary and statutory agencies. Between January and June
2006 out of total of 56 callers who were recorded as victims there
were 51 females and 5 males. The website contains information for
all victims with separate pages for male victims and other specific
groups. Posters which advertise the freephone service and website
feature visuals of both men and women of all ages, different ethnic
backgrounds and sexual orientation, and the language is inclusive
(e.g. “Are you afraid of someone you love or live with, or an
ex- partner? DOES HE/SHE ever…” and “whoever you
are…. information, help and support is available in Suffolk”)
£6,500 towards
development of materials linked to the Local Education Authority Personal
Social & Health Education (PSHE) curriculum for schools and informal
youth groups.
£10,000
towards awareness raising materials and events. Materials such as
leaflets, fluffy bugs, pens and bookmarks were disseminated at a diverse
range of events including specific opportunities to reach male victims
such as evening sessions at Sports Centres during November 2005, and
individual presentations to all male groups throughout the year such
as Rotary clubs and a rural men’s support group. We do not record
precise number or the gender of those who attend events such as the
Suffolk Show and Lowestoft Air Show where our materials are distributed
to thousands of people, so it is impossible to allocate how much of
the funding was of benefit to men versus women.
£5000 for
meeting expenses for the County Forum and Strategic Steering groups
(which are made of up representatives of voluntary and statutory agencies),
and for various training events which have been attended by both men
and women.
I hope this information
is useful. If I can be of further assistance, please contact me.
Regards,
Marianne Fellowes
