Subject: FOI REQUEST

Dear Mr Mortimer,

Thank you for your information request dated 28th June 2006 received in our office on the same date.

I have carefully reviewed your request and investigated whether there is any information disclosable to you. Please find below the information you have requested which was provided by our Housing Needs Department

We do not directly fund any help and support groups for either men’s or women’s aid in respect of domestic violence. We pump-primed the establishment of the Refuge Outreach Project in 2003 by allocating £50,000 of our Homelessness Grant from the (then) ODPM and the funding was subsequently taken over by the Supporting People programme. This project only supports women and children.

We also provide the building that houses the Eastbourne Women’s Refuge. The initial lease provided for the property to be let on a peppercorn rent to assist the development of the project. We are now in the process of negotiating a new lease and are considering with Refuge the impact that switching to a market rent will have on the viability of the project. These negotiations are still in progress so I am unable to report as to whether we will continue to subsidise the rental element of the project. Again, this project only supports women and children.

The only other direct work undertaken in respect of domestic violence is the recent development of a Sanctuary Scheme, which enables improvements to the security of the homes of victims of domestic violence to enable them to remain in their homes. This service is responsive to all needs and will therefore be available to both men and women. A sum of £10,000 has been identified within the current Private Sector Housing Grant to fund this initiative during 2006-07.

Please contact me again, quoting your reference number, if you require any further assistance with your current request and I will do my best to provide the relevant help and advice.

Yours sincerely,

Jackie Humphrey
