Subject: Domestic Abuse services in Aberdeenshire
Dear David
Aberdeenshire
Domestic Abuse Multi Agency Partnership does not collate information
on gender of service users separately. The work of the Partnership
is funded by the Scottish Executive in the main with additional small
streams of funding from Aberdeenshire Community Safety Partnership
and Aberdeenshire Homeless Strategy funding.
What I can confirm
is that services are provided according to need not gender. Our social
workers / outreach workers provide a service to men, women and children.
There are always men on their case loads at any given time. We do
have some ad hoc (sessions set up for 8 / 10 weeks depending on need
/ demand) group work set up for women and have attempted to do the
same for men. What we have found to date is that men have not been
as keen to engage in group work as women (this has been explored by
considering more suitable venues -the pub etc but we have been unable
to maintain attendance) It is our workers experience that men have
preferred one to one support to date. This is an issue we are still
exploring and hope to have some clear findings in due course. We did
have one male service user who was keen to provide peer and group
support and a lot of work was done to develop this but it did not
'take off'.
Our awareness
and publicity material has been carefully selected to ensure that
it is clear to the public that we provide services for males and females.
We have involved male and female service users in the development
of the materials.
You may also be
interested to know that in Aberdeenshire our social workers / domestic
abuse outreach workers work in partnership with Grampian police domestic
Abuse Liaison Officers (DALO's) and that both male and female workers
have filled these posts. We are currently recruiting domestic abuse
trainers (under the Scottish Exec Training Strategy) and again have
made a specific plea for male trainers as we very strongly believe
that all the work we do in this area must reflect a gender balance.
Yours sincerely
